The Lazy, Hazy Days of Summer

Jim Mease

It’s hard to believe it is already August and we are in the middle of our summer season! August is the 8th month of the year in the modern Gregorian calendar, but it was the sixth month of the year in ancient Roman times. It derives its name from Augustus Caesar, a significant figure in Ancient Rome. He was the first Roman Emperor and the grandnephew of the previous ruler, Julius Caesar, who had July named after him.

August marks the last full month of summer and is known for its heat and humidity, often referred to as the Dog Days of Summer alongside July. Historically, in ancient Greece and Rome, these days were seen as a time of drought and unrest, driven by extreme heat. The term "Dog Days" is associated with the rising of Sirius, the Dog Star, which the ancients believed contributed to the sweltering temperatures of summer. The name Sirius originates from the Greek word "seirios," meaning "scorching." For ancient Egyptians, the rise of Sirius signaled the onset of the Nile's flood season. While modern science debunks the star's influence on weather, its seasonal appearance is still tied to the folklore of the Dog Days, which typically occur in mid-to-late summer.

The Old Farmer's Almanac defines the Dog Days as the 40 days from July 3 to August 11, marking the peak of summer heat after the solstice. This period coincides with Rehoboth's high season, attracting crowds seeking relief from the heat.

While August lacks a federal holiday, it offers many observances worth celebrating. August 1 is Lammas Day, an ancient festival marking the wheat and corn harvest, during which fresh loaves were traditionally blessed. August 3rd celebrates National Watermelon Day, making it the perfect time to savor this summer's favorite fruit. Cats Nights on August 17 is inspired by an Irish legend about witches and the belief that cats have nine lives. Finally, August 26 is Women’s Equality Day, commemorating the 1920 ratification of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote in the U.S.

August weekly observances begin August 1st through the 7th, when you can honor International Clown Week by donning your favorite clown suit and performing fun clown activities. Did you know a female clown is known as a clunt? From August 3 to 9, we celebrate National Farmers Market Week, highlighting the importance of farmers' markets. The second week of August is also National Resurrect Romance Week, a time to reconnect with your special someone. Additionally, August 12-26 marks World Photography Week, encouraging people to share their photos on social media.

Monthly celebrations in August feature several notable events, including National Traffic Awareness Month, which promotes safety for all road users in Rehoboth Beach and Delmarva. It’s also National Goat Cheese Month, perfect for exploring unique flavors, and Boomers Making a Difference Month, honoring the contributions of Baby Boomers to communities. These observances reflect the vibrant life in Rehoboth Beach.

This month, RBMS has selected several member businesses to spotlight. Kilwins Ice Cream at 140 Rehoboth Avenue is the place for you. If cycling is your passion, don't miss Rehoboth Cycle Sports, a full-service bike shop at 174 Rehoboth Avenue. They specialize in both electric and regular bike rentals, including all the associated accessories you may need. Of course, for a great time, visit  Funland Amusement Park, located at 6 Delaware Avenue and the Boardwalk, which offers entertainment the whole family can enjoy, featuring amusement rides, family-style games, and an arcade. You'll be glad you stopped by. After a day on the beach or shopping, you may want to relax at Somewhere at 52 Baltimore Avenue, a pet-friendly tropical beach bar specializing in a blend of Caribbean Coastal comfort food for brunch and happy hour. All of these establishments will make your day one to remember, leaving you longing for your next visit. Rehoboth Beach main street volunteers have visited each of these places, and you can read more about their experience at each one later in this newsletter.

The High Season continues through August, and we encourage everyone to be mindful of bikers, scooters, motorcycles, joggers, dog walkers, and traffic while out and about. Whether you are on the boardwalk or browsing the many stores on the avenues, take time to enjoy the earth planters maintained by the volunteers from Rehoboth in Bloom. The canal side garden by the Rehoboth Beach Museum and the Verrazano Garden at Olive Avenue and the Boardwalk are also not to be missed this time of year, as they display their colorful array of summertime colors. Ensure you stay hydrated during the hazy, hot, and humid days of August and take the opportunity to enjoy all the pleasures of summertime in Rehoboth Beach.

Showcasing Rehoboth Businesses

Kilwins

Maria Misak

The first time I walked down Rehoboth Avenue years ago, one particular storefront caught my eye - Kilwins. Growing up in Michigan, I was very familiar with Kilwins and their heavenly in-store-made fudge and other delights. Anyone who has walked by their storefront at 140 Rehoboth Avenue has seen the decadent offerings, from chocolate-dipped pretzel rods and handmade fudge to gourmet caramel apples almost too pretty to eat.

But on hot summer days like we’ve been experiencing recently, it’s their ice cream that draws me in. Kilwins has been making ice cream since 1985, and has perfected its original recipe, a premium, kosher-certified treat which is only sold in their stores.

On this particular day, my friend Peter and I had just enjoyed dinner at a local spot and decided on an ice cream nightcap. He has heard many stories of my life in Michigan, and he hadn’t experienced a Kilwins cone, so this was the night to introduce him to something special.

The first challenge was walking past the fudge, chocolates, and apple displays, but we managed to reach the back counter, where we immediately knew we had to have one of the in-store-made waffle cones. Although you can customize with toppings and add flavors, we opted to keep it simple; I got a cappuccino chocolate chip, and Peter got the sea salt caramel.

But I must say I chuckled when I saw the “Superman” ice cream  (a swirled mix of pink, yellow, and blue) - fellow Michiganders can attest to its regional popularity.

Decadent treats in hand, we finished the evening with a stroll on the boardwalk. Perfect ending to a summer night in town.

Kilwins has been delighting people with their chocolates and other products for decades. Many of these products are made fresh in each store, allowing customers to watch the process. It’s like watching an artist create something beautiful out of something ordinary. Pop in next time you walk by - you’ll be glad you did.

Somewhere

Peter Beck

In the words of one Google reviewer: “Somewhere is where taste buds do the cha-cha, and the universe winks at your appetite.”  With such an intriguing review, I knew that this was the place we had to go for dinner and drinks when my friend Greg visited from DC.

Located in a classic, 100-year-old Victorian-era building, you will find Somewhere at 52 Baltimore Avenue. In 2020, the charming space previously occupied by the Iguana Grill and Cantina became available. Owners Aileen Hearn and Kyle Ten-Eyck renovated the structure with bright paint and new equipment. Thus, a mystical oasis in the heart of Rehoboth Beach was born!

Diners love sitting outside on the veranda, a perfect spot for people-watching along the avenue. Even more appealing is the cozy outdoor oasis and sand patio constructed on the side of the building. It’s so much fun to eat and drink with friends while your feet are in the sand, relaxing in the rattan wicker chair, sipping a cocktail, or lounging on the comfy Adirondack chairs. What an ideal way to spend an evening!

That night, Greg and I were greeted by a warm and friendly waitress who made us feel comfortable and was very attentive throughout our meal. We kicked off dinner with the winning margarita from the 2025 RBMS Margarita Crawl. The delicious margarita was a fantastic start to the evening. I ordered a scrumptious smash burger, while Greg opted for a mahi-mahi taco; both are favorites among regular visitors to Somewhere.

Additionally, Somewhere is open for brunch. During previous visits, I enjoyed the Eggs Splenidict with crab cake and the excellent breakfast sandwich on a croissant. Yum!

By the way, if you’re a coffee lover, you’ll be pleased to know that Somewhere has a fully manual espresso machine imported from Italy, which makes delicious coffee drinks. Be sure to try their excellent espresso martini sometime.

Be sure to check out Somewhere by calling 302-858-6280 or visiting their website at somewhereatthebeach.com.

A Summer Tradition Lives on at Funland—Celebrating Their 63rd Season!

Colleen Evans

In a world that seems to change by the minute, Funland at 6 Delaware Avenue & the Boardwalk) remains a comforting constant for families returning to Rehoboth Beach year after year. As they celebrate their 63rd season, they are proud to continue offering an experience where generations come together to create new memories while reliving old ones.

Since opening its doors in 1962, Funland has been more than just a place to ride the boats or test your skill on the skeeball lanes—It’s been a cherished tradition passed down from grandparents to parents to children. Funland often hears from visitors who share stories of their childhood visits, now watching their kids light up with the same joy they once felt. In an ever-evolving world, that kind of continuity is rare, significant, and something the Funland family is proud to offer.

They increasingly find that their customers come into Funland looking for a nostalgic step back in time, simple fun, kind smiles, and the magic of spending time together. Whether it's a ride on the iconic Haunted Mansion or a spin on the carousel, they invite you to forget the stress of everyday life and be part of something enduring.

Funland is honored to be a part of so many family traditions and is incredibly grateful to its guests, who return each year to make Funland a part of their summer stories. Here’s to another season of smiles, screams, and sweet moments that will live on for generations to come.

News from Rehoboth in Bloom

Peter Beck

In Shakespeare’s Sonnet 54, he writes, "The rose looks fair, but fairer we it deem / For that sweet odour which doth in it live."  He suggests that true beauty extends beyond surface appearances. It is enriched by inner qualities like truth and integrity, much like a rose’s fragrance enhances its beauty.

As you walk through town this summer, you'll notice beautiful planters filled with flowers that enhance the atmosphere and vibrancy of your day, and hopefully, you can connect with YOUR  inner beauty!  We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the many Rehoboth in Bloom volunteers for their outstanding efforts!!

Wastewater Treatment Plant Improvements

The City of Rehoboth Beach is undertaking an approximately 10-year, $70 million project to make critical improvements at its wastewater treatment plant. The city is currently nearing completion of Phase 3 of this four-phase project. Associated completed projects include the construction of the ocean outfall, the installation of an ocean outfall force main, and the replacement of the effluent pump station.

Phase 3 includes mixer replacement (which has been completed) as well as the construction of a new dewatering facility and the conversion of existing aerobic digesters to waste sludge holding tanks, which is currently underway. Phase 3B work is expected to be completed in June 2025.

Phase 4 work will include the installation of new plant controls, replacement of chemical feed systems, all sludge and scum pumps, HVAC equipment, flow control equipment, and water pumping systems. Additionally, renovations will be made to the dewatering building and three large storage tanks, as well as miscellaneous architectural repairs. Phase 4 construction costs are included in the city's capital improvement plans for the next three years, fiscal years 2026-28. Work on this phase is expected to begin in fall of 2025.
