Bring on Spring, Please!

Peter Beck

Out with the cold and in with the new! As flowers bloom, businesses throughout our city are refreshing their offerings. It’s a perfect time to make some changes! Spring is a wonderful season to start fresh, especially knowing that summer is just around the corner.

Astronomically, March 20 marks the first day of spring, when the Earth's equator aligns directly with the sun during the vernal equinox. However, many of us will be looking forward to March 8, 2026, when daylight saving time begins. Once we move the clocks forward, we can enjoy longer evenings for shopping and dining in town.

This month, we are highlighting several outstanding businesses in Rehoboth Beach. If you're looking for a fantastic dinner to celebrate the joys of the season, Shorebreak Lodge is the perfect spot! You can also grab lunch at Arena’s Deli while visiting Browseabout Books for the ideal read on a warmer spring day, or check out Sea Finds in the Penny Lane Mall for a delightful gift.

We have many exciting events sponsored by RBMS in the coming weeks, including Fashion Weekend and Runway 2026, from March 27-29. It promises to be a fabulous occasion! Additionally, planning is underway for two fantastic April bashes: the annual Gumbo Crawl on Saturday, April 11, and “It’s a Blooming Dance Party” at the Convention Center on April 17. We hope to see you all at these events as we celebrate the excitement of this rejuvenating season!

Browseabout Books

Peter Beck

On a chilly Wednesday afternoon in February, I stopped by Browseabout Books at 133 Rehoboth Avenue to use a gift card. I asked Jill, the friendly saleslady, to help me find the book I wanted. As we walked past the children’s section, I noticed a title that caught my eye: "Zig Zag Zeph: The True Story of a Special Cat." This book, written a few years ago by my former colleague and friend Meg Edson, is a tribute to her wonderful cat, who had a condition that made him walk in zigzags.  It was so exciting to see a friend's book on the shelves!

A moment later, I spotted the sequel to Meg’s book, "Zig Zag Zeph and Friends," on a book rack. As we continued to explore the store, I saw my neighbor Deb Griffin’s book, "Love Lewes," on the shelves!

It was clear that one of Browseabout Books' unique aspects is its focus on local authors, setting it apart from chain stores. I appreciated the personal service I received, especially when Jill helped me find the book I initially came in to purchase. In fact, since 1975, Browseabout Books has been a cherished cornerstone of Rehoboth Avenue, providing an experience that large chain stores simply cannot replicate. It offers personalized service and serves as a vital hub for the community.

Indeed, as I learned that day, you will always appreciate the exciting literary opportunities available at Browseabout! Visit https://www.browseaboutbooks.com, or just stop by the store. With an extensive collection of over 35,000 titles—ranging from history and science to fiction and biography—this local indie bookstore ensures you’ll find the perfect book. If it’s not on the shelves, don’t worry; the friendly and knowledgeable staff can easily order it for you! You’ll also discover a delightful children’s section and engaging “Staff Picks” displays featuring employees’ favorite recommendations.

But Browseabout Books is not just about books. It’s a treasure trove of toys, jigsaw puzzles, stationery, anime, graphic novels, magazines, and unique gifts. While you’re there, you can grab a newspaper, treat yourself to delicious coffee, indulge in some chocolate and snacks, or even pick up an umbrella or a fun beach souvenir. Don’t miss the adjacent gift shop, filled with one-of-a-kind gift ideas, charming household décor, greeting cards, coffee mugs, artisan soaps, and interesting trinkets—all at budget-friendly prices!

Looking for an enriching outing? Browseabout frequently hosts exciting meet-and-greet events with authors and organizes engaging book clubs that attract readers of all ages, fostering a love of literature and community engagement. Plus, Browseabout proudly sponsors the annual History Book Festival, a highly anticipated fall event that celebrates the joy of reading.

Discover the wealth of literary opportunities waiting for you at Browseabout Books. Take your time exploring the shelves and prepare to be inspired!

Shorebreak Lodge

Maria Misak

Looking to squash the mid-winter blahs, Peter and I treated ourselves to dinner at Shorebreak Lodge (10 Wilmington Avenue) on a recent Thursday evening. Ben and Diane Winiarczyk purchased Shorebreak Lodge in January 2024 and, after adding their personal touches to the décor and menu, reopened it in March 2024. In 2025, it was named “Best New Restaurant Downstate” by Delaware Today and is nominated in several categories this year; it is easy to see why

They strive to make each dining experience special and intimate, without ever being pretentious. From the warm welcome by Diane to our friendly server, Kara, that is exactly how our evening was. We even forgot it was a rainy, dreary night.

The menu is seasonally inspired, using fresh ingredients and prepared in an allergy-aware kitchen. They kept some of the signature dishes that put Shorebreak Lodge’s mark on the local dining scene, such as the char-grilled octopus, and their offerings present several tempting options. We enjoyed fabulous halibut and shrimp and grits entrees, and finished the meal with decadent Mom Mom’s cheesecake and carrot cake.

In addition to the impressive menu, they offer Ben’s unparalleled cocktails—several of which have won competitions. We enjoyed a few, including the Ginger Yuzu margarita, the 1st-place winner of the Tacomania margarita contest.

A great way to explore their offerings is Tapas Tuesday, featuring smaller portions of their most popular dishes. Live music accompanies dinner from 5:30–8:30pm on Jazz Wednesday. And with so many inventive cocktail options, “Half Pour Thursday” is the perfect opportunity to sample and discover a new favorite.

Shorebreak Lodge is one of those places that makes an impression the moment you arrive. From the dog-friendly heated patio to the simple, elegant blue-and-white décor, it is a calm and welcoming space. Ben and Diane have cultivated an upscale yet relaxed dining experience that, when paired with one of their creative cocktails, creates a truly memorable evening and makes Shorebreak Lodge the kind of place where old friends gather and new friendships are made.

Sea Finds

Peter Beck

One of my favorite collectibles has been the December Diamond Merman holiday ornaments that are sold at Sea Finds, 42 Rehoboth Avenue, at the Wilmington Avenue end of Penny Lane. I actually buy one every holiday season and put it on the window latch in my sunroom so I can enjoy it year-round.

This holiday season, I attended a party and saw a large December Diamond Merman on the food table that looked a lot like Jonathan Bailey (from Wicked and People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive in 2025).

I went down to Sea Finds, hoping they carried it, and showed the very friendly saleslady a picture I took.  Sadly, I learned that the style I wanted was a few years old and no longer available, although perhaps I could find a used model on eBay! So, I had to content myself with a very fun ‘Rebel’ figurine rather than a Jonathan Bailey look-alike!

Every time I go to Sea Finds, I find the salespeople warm and friendly.  It makes shopping there a wonderful experience!

At Sea Finds, conveniently situated at the Wilmington Avenue end of Penny Lane, you'll discover a delightful array of whimsical beach gifts that many of us love, such as shells, cards, beach-themed décor, wooden signs, posters of the boardwalk, and the iconic Dolle’s Rehoboth sign. While these popular items are certainly a highlight, the shop also features many unique and interesting treasures.

On display are exquisite Murano and Venetian glassware imported from Italy. Along the back wall, you'll find a variety of fun jigsaw puzzles showcasing covers from The New Yorker and House & Garden magazines. The store also offers delicious-looking jams, writing journals, Halloween merchandise, and winter holiday ornaments. Additional items include scented room sprays, soaps, decorative pillows, and attractive jewelry. The shop even showcases artwork from local artists.

Since its opening in 2007, Sea Finds has been a staple of the Rehoboth shopping scene. Linda Abrams and her late husband, Alva, retired from Wilmington and moved to the area, where Alva had many fond memories from his youth. Their love for the community is evident when you visit their shop!

Linda shared that she previously owned Penny Lane Lighting, which closed a few weeks ago. However, Sea Finds will continue to carry lighted trees, night lights, and some other popular lighting and artwork from the former lighting store.

For the winter season, Sea Finds will be open on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays until Thursday, March 12. After that date, the shop will be open from Thursdays to Mondays. They will extend their hours before and after Easter, and starting May 1, 2026, Sea Finds will be open seven days a week through January 1, 2027.

Be sure to stop by Sea Finds on your next trip downtown to enjoy the wide variety of merchandise and the friendly assistance of the employees! You're guaranteed to have a thoroughly enjoyable shopping experience!

Volunteer Recognition

This month's Volunteer of the Month is Maria Misak, a talented staff photographer and writer. Maria has been volunteering with RBMS for about two years and has proven to be an invaluable member of our team.

Before moving to Delaware, Maria worked for the NSA as an intelligence analyst for 34 years. After retiring in Millsboro, she realized the beach traffic was not to her liking. Now, she happily lives just two miles from the shoreline. Having been born and raised on the shores of Lake Michigan, being close to the beach is a perfect fit for her.

Maria sold her home in Millsboro and moved to Rehoboth Beach, where she has since become a dedicated volunteer. Everyone appreciates her fantastic photography for the monthly RBMS newsletter. Additionally, she serves on two committees: Communications and Promotions. Maria thoroughly enjoys local events, particularly the Margarita and Gumbo Crawls and, of course, the Roper Romp!

In addition to her work with RBMS, Maria volunteers at the Blood Bank of Delmarva and the Rehoboth Art League.

In her spare time, Maria enjoys crocheting and knitting, often creating lap blankets for individuals in wheelchairs. She loves riding her bike on the trails of Cape Henlopen State Park and taking long walks on the beach, where she collects sea glass and shells. During the off-season, she enjoys trying out different restaurants in town, especially since many establishments offer fabulous specials.

Thank you, Maria, for all you do for RBMS!

RBMS Mourns the Loss of Edmund Gmoch

Ed Gmoch, Beach Essentials staff since 2009, passed away peacefully on February 3, 2026, following a series of prolonged illnesses. Ed was born on December 6, 1945, in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

Ed graduated from Bemidji State University (MN) with a degree in Education and immediately landed a teaching job in Deptford Township (NJ), where he enjoyed a career in public education until his retirement 34 years later. Over those three-plus decades, Ed came to be admired and respected by his colleagues for his consummate professionalism, collegiality, and unwavering commitment to the field, while also becoming beloved by his students for his motivation, inspiration, eloquence, and devotion to their success in school and in life. In addition to teaching U.S. History to freshmen, Ed served as Advisor to the National Honor Society and, early in his career, directed plays at the middle school.

Ed was named Deptford’s Teacher of the Year, an honor he relished even more than his well-deserved school recognition as Best Dressed Teacher from his students and colleagues.

In 2009, Ed joined the staff at Beach Essentials, where he fitted swimwear and styled both locals and summer visitors. Ever the fashionisto, Ed took great pride in selecting each season’s beach and social fashions for his customers. Many will best remember Ed for his impeccable fashion sense and iconic style.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on February 14 at St. Edmond Catholic Church in Rehoboth Beach.

City of Rehoboth Beach awarded Tree City USA designation for 35th Year!

The City of Rehoboth Beach has been recognized as a Tree City for the 35th consecutive year by the Arbor Day Foundation due to its commitment to tree planting and maintenance. To receive this designation, cities must maintain a tree board, have a community tree ordinance, invest in urban forestry, and celebrate Arbor Day.

Urban Forestry and Parks Manager Michael Lilly noted that public input has helped choose replacement trees, including Sugar Maples and Northern Red Oaks, for Stockley St Park. This spring, the focus will be on planting 21 new trees around Lake Gerar, alongside deciduous trees for shade. Additional street tree plantings are planned for Hickman Street, Country Club Drive, and State Road this fall, aiming for around 24 new trees.

The city will celebrate Arbor Day with a planting ceremony at Stockley Park in April with local elementary students. The Arbor Day Foundation, which supports tree planting and care globally, operates the Tree City USA program in partnership with various organizations. The detail about Maria Misak spending 34 years as an NSA intelligence analyst before retiring to volunteer as a community photographer and crocheter of lap blankets is the kind of life story that makes a newsletter actually worth reading. The Gumbo Crawl with 20 to 25 restaurants and a vote for best gumbo and best cocktail sounds like exactly the kind of low key local event that builds real community. Came across a coastal town community events roundup over at https://direwolfseo.co.uk/ featuring similar Main Street programmes which felt very relevant here. Rehoboth Beach clearly knows how to keep its downtown alive in the off season.
