Labor Day

Jim Mease

Labor Day is a federal holiday that is observed on the first Monday in September. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 standardized it in order to ensure that most workers had a guaranteed long weekend. This year it falls on the first, but it can be as late as the 7th.

The timing of Labor Day is no accident, as the holiday was intentionally placed at a point in the year when workers could use a break. It’s a time to take a moment to step back and appreciate the battles fought, the progress made, and the challenges that still remain for working people.

Positioned early in the month, Labor Day precedes the shift to fall schedules for many.  Some schools start before the holiday, while others wait, allowing families a final summer trip. Positioned early in the month, it precedes the shift to fall schedules for many. This has led to Labor Day being seen as the unofficial end of summer, which officially concludes with the Autumn Equinox on the 22nd.

Here in Rehoboth Beach, the Labor Day weekend signals the beginning of the shoulder season when things begin to slow down from the hectic pace of capacity summer crowds competing for parking, restaurant reservations, and beach time. September weather, with warm afternoons but cooler mornings and evenings, still allows for many outdoor activities.

After the Labor Day weekend, there are many worthy observances for all to enjoy during September.  Ginger Cat Appreciation Day is on September 1, founded by Chris Roy to honor his ginger cat, who passed in 2014. If you have a ginger cat, show extra love and support for the unique personalities they each have. On September 4th, it's Eat an Extra Dessert Day, when you can have an extra dessert. So go ahead and order two without feeling any shame or guilt.  The 4th is also National Cheese Pizza Day, so order one and savor a slice of gooey cheese pizza for yourself. Then, on September 7th, it's National Beer Lovers Day, when beer lovers are encouraged to enjoy their favorite brews or try something new. Finally, on September 18, you can celebrate National Respect Day when everyone is encouraged to show respect to one another.  All of these observances are easily celebrated individually or with friends while you are enjoying the sun, sand, and surf of Rehoboth Beach.

We have also selected a number of our member businesses to be showcased in this month’s newsletter. Mainstreet representatives have written about their experience with each business. The Pines, 56 Baltimore Avenue, is an American Bistro offering creative American Cuisine and craft cocktails in a lively atmosphere that is sure to please. Art off the Avenue at 33 Baltimore Avenue is a nonprofit organization that highlights local artistry to a wider audience through open venues and empty storefronts. They offer a variety of local landscapes and wildlife photography on canvas, metals, framed and matted prints, and other photography-related services. As you stroll the Avenue, get a scoop of ice cream at Archie's Ice Cream at 42 Rehoboth Avenue, where they serve up tasty homemade soft serve ice cream and drinks. Be sure and check out Rehoboth Breeze at 138 Rehoboth Avenue for high-quality t-shirts, hats, and beach apparel from both classic and funky designs that will allow you to show off your individual style.

Rehoboth Beach Main Street wishes all a safe and fun-filled Labor Day weekend. Please be mindful of bikers, scooters, joggers, dog walkers, and traffic while you are out and about in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Enjoy the beautiful plant displays on the avenues as you stroll about downtown. Rehoboth In Bloom volunteers have been working tirelessly to keep the planters, the canal side garden by the museum, and the Verrazzano garden on the boardwalk fresh and beautiful for your viewing pleasure.

The Pines Coastal Tavern

Peter Beck

If I could place an order for the perfect summer evening, it was the Monday night when Maria and I went to the Pines Coastal Tavern for dinner: no humidity, no bugs, no heat, and excellent company. We started our evening across the street at Aqua, a popular bar and grill that is also a destination of the Second Block Hospitality Group. We enjoyed our orange crushes and the live music of Robbie Lablanc, who plays folk music and soft rock from the '60s and '70s.

We then went across the street to the Pines at 56 Baltimore Avenue. We were immediately impressed by the elegant yet relaxed ambiance of the room. The hostess promptly showed us to our seats on the charming front porch overlooking Baltimore Avenue.  Since it was Monday, it was Filet and Wine Night!  We knew that we were going to happily devour the filet, accompanied by a tasty glass of Cabernet.

Chastity, our waitress, was gracious, warm, and welcoming, making us very comfortable. Happy diners filled the restaurant, most of whom seemed to be reveling in the steak and wine special.

The filets arrived, well done for me and medium rare for Maria. Cooked to perfection, we savored every bite!  The meal came with crispy-fresh green beans and mashed potatoes, and I also ordered a serving of baby buttered carrots on the side (my favorite)!  Our meal was quite filling, so there was no room for dessert.

When asked about diners' favorite dishes, Chastity told us that steak frites, salmon, and roasted chicken breast were quite popular.  We will have to try them the next time we come.

Be aware that there are daily happy hour food and drink specials at the downstairs bar from 5:00-7:00pm.  On Thursdays through Sundays, you can also enjoy happy hour upstairs in the Treehouse Lounge, a fabulous space to hang out with friends and chill.  In the evening, a food menu featuring elevated tavern fare is available in the lounge along with numerous choices of craft cocktails. On Fridays and Saturdays, you can listen to live piano shows.  Saturday is entertaining because the piano player, Mark Grafton, takes requests from the crowd and urges partygoers to sing along!

On their website, the Pines Coastal Tavern is described as “Where the pine trees meet the ocean and a classic tavern meets a modern interpretation.”  Stop in while strolling down the avenue, make a reservation either online or by calling 302-567-2726, buy gift cards for friends, or cater a party.

We relished our ideal summer experience and plan to return to the Pines soon!

Art off the Avenue

Robert Howley

The new owners of Art off the Avenue, Susan McLean and Kim Johnson, are now open for business in their new shop at 33 Baltimore Avenue, Unit D/E, in downtown Rehoboth Beach.

McLean and Johnson sell a variety of local landscape and wildlife photography on canvas, metal, and as framed and matted prints. They offer a range of other photography-related services, including family portraits, professional headshots, real estate photography, commercial photography, and more. McLean also offers social media, incorporation, and registered agent services, and she helps clients with various marketing and advertising needs.

Their little part of the neighborhood is located right next to the Blue Moon, in the Shops at Baltimore Commons, in the courtyard between Beaches—The Green Truck Shop and Elegant Slumming Fine Jewelry.

In the off-season, they are open primarily on weekends, but offer consultations and appointments for private browsing seven days a week.

Rehoboth Breeze

Dan Slagle

Rehoboth Breeze, located at 138 Rehoboth Avenue, is a family-owned business celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2025. They offer top-quality T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, and bags in both classic, funky, and humorous designs to represent the visitor’s unique Rehoboth Beach experience.  A distinctive feature of Rehoboth Breeze is that many of the T-shirts they offer are Comfort Colors brand.  These are 100% cotton, pre-shrunk, durable garments. Comfort Colors garments are pigment-dyed and, through the dyeing process, become incredibly soft.

Rehoboth Breeze is proud to be the only retailer in downtown Rehoboth to carry the unique designs produced by Big Hed.  They also offer T-shirts and sweatshirts from a variety of sources, including Buddy By The Sea, Austin’s, Sea Dog, Planet Cotton, NuBlu Sport, Renegade, and Ocean Beach. Rehoboth Breeze offers hats from L2 Brands (Legacy) and remarkable bags from Blue Q.

Archies

Maria Misak

This summer, I got the worst possible assignment–writing about the ice cream shops in town. I mean, who in their right mind would want an assignment expecting you to spend the summer eating ice cream and other incredible treats?

Difficult though it was, I soldiered on. This month, my focus was on Archie’s, a fixture in downtown for over 10 years. As anyone who walks around town has probably noticed, they have 2 locations in town: 42 Rehoboth Avenue (at the entrance to Penny Lane) and on the other side of the street at 25 Rehoboth Avenue. So no matter which side of the avenue you are strolling on, it’s a convenient stop when you’re looking for a treat.

Archie’s ice cream is homemade in-house, and one of their claims to fame is the fruit flavors that are made with real fruit: no food coloring or extract in these delicious treats! They also offer milkshakes and soft-serve flavors, which is one of my weaknesses–especially a chocolate vanilla twist. However, since I had enjoyed their ice cream on previous visits, it was their freshly made-to-order lemonade that caught my eye on this very hot and humid day. Anyone who has walked by has certainly noticed the lemon-themed decor and the jars of lemons and oranges (for fresh orangeade) on the counter.

I opted for a raspberry lemonade. Not only was it sunshine in a cup, it was incredibly refreshing. I learned they go through several hundred lemons a day, and now that I’ve experienced this treat, I can see why. Not too sour, not too sweet–absolute perfection and the best antidote to a hot summer day.

Volunteer Recognition: Diane Cutler

Robert Howley

ree

This month, we recognize the superb work of Diane Cutler, a Rehoboth in Bloom volunteer.  Diane grew up in Philadelphia and graduated from Penn State University with a BS in Secondary Education/Mathematics. She started her career as a high school teacher and then went on to over 35 years in organizational development and consulting with Price Waterhouse LLC in Florida and Virginia, and Marriott International in Bethesda, Maryland, before retiring in 2016 in Rehoboth Beach.

It started 30 years ago: When visiting friends, Diane fell in love with Rehoboth Beach. In 2000, she and her husband, Mace, bought a weekend getaway in Rehoboth—a dream come true!  Enjoying the beach every weekend was not enough.  So, in 2004, when an opportunity arose to work remotely from home, they packed their bags, sold their house in Vienna, VA, and moved to Rehoboth permanently.

For the past 21 years, Diane has enjoyed living in our great town, frequenting all of the wonderful restaurants, bars, and retail businesses.  Additionally, she has enjoyed giving back to the community—actively involved in Lower Delaware Autism Foundation, now Autism Delaware. For the past 11 years, Diane has been an active member of her Sawgrass Community—early on with the social committee, event planning, and treasurer, and most recently with the architectural review committee.

Since its inception, for the past 7 years, Diane has been an active volunteer with Rehoboth in Bloom.  As an acting team leader and management committee member/ treasurer, Diane loves working with all the great volunteers and also the FLOWERS!  “Rehoboth in Bloom is the greatest way to contribute to the greatest beach town in the world!”

Dana & Kevin Peccon: Why Am I a Member of RBMS?

ree

RBMS recently created a RBMS YouTube video featuring Dana & Kevin Peccon, owners of Beaches–The Green Truck Shop. In the interview, the Peccons note that, when they moved to Delaware, they brought their business with them. They immediately felt welcomed by RBMS. Dana and Kevin had heard RBMS was a great organization from neighboring businesses and wanted to associate themselves with something that was reputable. Advice received from RBMS staff and volunteers has been helpful in navigating the direction the business should go. And, Dana is now a member of the RBMS Board of Directors and can ‘officially’ share the Welcome to RBMS with old and new businesses in Rehoboth Beach!
