Here Comes Summer
Jim Mease
June is blooming all over the place now that Memorial Day is behind us, signaling the start of summer in Rehoboth Beach and the Delmarva peninsula. With longer days and plenty of sunshine, we can enjoy our beaches. In the northern hemisphere, the summer solstice, occurring between June 20th and 22nd, marks the first day of astronomical summer, while meteorological summer starts on June 1st. Although temperatures rise, they won’t peak until July and August.
To add more confusion, this time of year is also known as Midsummer, although this is often cited as being on the 24th. For most of us, though, the main feature of the summer solstice is that it is the most extended period of sunlight or daylight for the year, when we will receive sunlight at the most direct angle. This year, it officially occurs when the sun reaches a point directly overhead of the Tropic of Cancer (latitude 23.44 degrees north) on June 20th at 22:45 hrs.
While often seen as the same, Midsummer is distinct from the summer solstice. It symbolizes the midpoint of the harvesting season and is linked to St. John the Baptist's feast day, where bonfires were lit to ward off evil spirits. Most importantly, it marks the start of over 90 days of hot and humid weather, perfect for fishing, swimming, boating, and enjoying the beach.
Other noteworthy June days and months-long celebrations include the start of the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1st and National Accordion Awareness month, established in 1989 to help spread the word and educate us about the accordion's resurgence in popularity.
June features several notable days, including World Environment Day on June 5th, which raises environmental awareness. June 6th marks National Donut Day, honoring the Salvation Army's efforts during World War 1. National Iced Tea Day is celebrated on June 10th, commemorating the introduction of chilled tea at the 1904 St. Louis World Fair. Flag Day falls on June 14th, where we proudly display the American flag, followed by Father's Day on the 15th to honor fathers and grandfathers.
On June 19th, we celebrate Juneteenth, also known as Freedom or Emancipation Day, as a National Holiday. On this day in 1865, Union General Gordon Granger read the Emancipation Proclamation in Galveston, Texas, effectively liberating slaves in the last holdout state in the Confederacy.
June 21st is International Yoga Day, which focuses on the role of yoga in achieving sustainable goals of harmony and peace. June 26 marks the Islamic New Year, which begins with the first sighting of the crescent Moon after the new moon in the month of Muharram, the first month of the year, and a time of reflection and fasting for many Muslins. This event signals the start of the Islamic lunar calendar year. Finally, on June 28, we celebrate the anniversary of the 1969 Stonewall Riots- a watershed moment in the gay rights movement in the US and worldwide.

Showcasing Rehoboth Businesses
Indigo
Peter Beck
On a beautiful Sunday evening in early May, my friend Maria and I were totally in the mood for delicious Indian food. What better place than Indigo at 44 Rehoboth Avenue in downtown Rehoboth Beach?
When we entered, the very gracious Mr. Kumar, the owner's nephew, greeted us and showed us our seats.Papadam was immediately served at our table, hot and fresh. For appetizers, we ordered the scrumptious and generous mixed vegetables, which were quite tasty and fried to perfection.
Maria ordered buttered chicken and garlic naan, while I enjoyed my usual chicken biryani with plain old naan. The portions were so significant that we both brought home doggie bags, although since my dog does not like Indian spices, I ate my leftovers for lunch the next day. We had no room for dessert: maybe next time!
Mr. Kumar visited our table several times to ensure we enjoyed our experience. Both Maria and I enjoyed the personal touch!
The restaurant's owner, Mr. Suraj Kumar, came to Washington, D.C., from Punjab, India. He worked at Indian restaurants in several cities nationwide, eventually settling in the Annapolis area in 1991 and opening a restaurant there with his wife.
Luckily for those who love Indian cuisine, Mr. Kumar moved to Delaware and opened Indigo in downtown Rehoboth Beach in June 2017. Indigo filled a major gap in the Rehoboth food scene, as there was no Indian restaurant in town! As a new resident who relocated from Washington, DC, I am overjoyed that there is now an Indian restaurant in our town.
In 2022, the restaurant underwent a few changes: the bar was expanded, and some redecoration was done to make the space as inviting as possible.
Check out Indigo and see for yourself. We had such an excellent evening that we plan to return soon!

The Ice Cream Store
Maria Misak
On a hot summer day, nothing hits the spot like ice cream, and one of the most popular shops in Rehoboth Beach to fill that need is “The Ice Cream Store” at 6 Rehoboth Avenue. They’ve been serving award-winning ice cream since 1970, and their enthusiastic customers line up for one of over 100 flavors that range from African vanilla to Zombie.
With so many choices, on a recent visit, I narrowed it down to 5 - but I still couldn’t decide. So I turned to the wheel of flavors and let fate choose for me. I spun the wheel, hoped for something unique, and chuckled when I saw my selection. “I’d like a small bowl of Crack, please”.
And with my first spoonful, I was addicted.
“The Ice Cream Store” is a Rehoboth mainstay and has been a key player in the vacation memories of many families. On this particular day, I laughed as a young boy pulled his dad up the boardwalk while yelling, “Hurry up, Daddy! I need some booger!” (Booger is green colored cake batter ice cream with green caramel swirl and marshmallow bits; kids love it.) Maybe the wheel of flavor will select that one for me next time.
“The Ice Cream Store” also carries vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, and sugar-free options—truly, something for everyone. Get it in a traditional cone or bowl or a freshly baked and rolled waffle cone or bowl. Top it off with your choice of sprinkles—aka jimmies. Try a milkshake, sundae, or fresh fruit smoothie. No matter what you choose, it will hit the spot. Life is short, so eat dessert! And make sure some of it is from “The Ice Cream Store”.
Baja Bobs
Peter Beck
It was foggy Wednesday evening at the boardwalk. Maria and I decided to pop into Baja Bob's, located right on the boardwalk at 101 S Boardwalk, for some good cheer.
Baja Bob's is located under the very popular Above the Dunes. Mike Venanzi and Bob Frankis co-own both restaurants, and we were curious to see how they compared.
Although it was a depressing and dreary night, I could envision the fantastic view on a sunny day. Just like Above the Dunes, the seats are positioned to face the boardwalk, perfect for those who want to people-watch or enjoy the ocean view!
The restaurant is a cheerful, colorful space with interesting murals and brightly designed chairs. We felt immediately at home.
At the bar, we were greeted by the very friendly bartender/server Kara, who made us feel welcome. Throughout our visit, we engaged in pleasant conversation with Kara. Throughout the evening, it felt like we had made a new friend.
Kara made us tasty margaritas, which helped us combat the dreariness of the weather outside! This was followed by several delicious dishes: tasty chicken quesadillas, several beef tacos, and a yummy grilled shrimp burrito. We enjoyed our food and were stuffed when we were done.
Visit Baja Bob’s website to explore their menu, which features various delicious drinks. The food options are diverse, including tacos, burritos, fajitas, bowls, salads, handhelds, and sides. Diners will also find a complete dinner menu with options like Surf and Turf, Bistec a la Tampiqueña (grilled steak), Al Mojo de Ajo Shrimp (Mexican garlic shrimp), and many other selections for those with hearty appetites!
There's something for everyone at Baja Bob's! You will also learn that you can order food online for your convenience.
Even better, Baja Bob’s features a take-out window right on the boardwalk for those who want a quick bite. It’s referred to as the “Tac-Out” window: clever! You can easily order your food and bring it down to the beach or enjoy your meal on one of the benches on the boardwalk.
Whether looking for a quick bite or a sit-down meal, Baja Bob’s has something for everyone!
MG Fashion: Celebrating 7 Seasons of Style and Community
Dan Slagle

Giselle Akdag, owner and stylist at MG Fashion, is at 139 Rehoboth Avenue in the heart of downtown Rehoboth Beach. Her journey began in 2015 when she arrived as a J-1 student and instantly fell in love with the town’s charm. By 2018, Giselle made Rehoboth her permanent home; in 2019, she realized her dream of opening MG Fashion.
With a background in economics and a master’s degree in foreign trade, Giselle combined her academic knowledge with a passion for fashion. At just 20 years old, she began styling individuals, fueling her love for helping others feel confident through fashion. This ultimately led to the establishment of her boutique.
Now celebrating its seventh season, MG Fashion offers unique clothing, jewelry, and accessories that resonate with women aged 13 to 80—because style knows no age! In 2024, they launched an online store, www.shopmgfashion.com, allowing visitors to enjoy the curated collections even after they return home.
Starting Memorial Day week, MG Fashion will be open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM to help you find your perfect summer style.
This journey would not have been possible without the support of loyal customers and Giselle’s family—her husband Matt Kilic, their 5.5-year-old son Landon, their 1.5-year-old daughter Liana, and the baby boy they are eagerly expecting this summer (yes, they are building a little in-house team!).
Rehoboth Beach Main Street is honored to share Giselle Akdag's story and looks forward to continuing our collaboration with MG Fashion for many more seasons in this beautiful community.

Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market Reopens; CRC Provides Opportunities to Donate!

The Rehoboth Beach Farmers’ Market reopened Tuesday, May 6, and will have a table each week to collect perishable and non-perishable donations in support of the Community Resource Center (CRC).
Per CRC, 19 shipments scheduled to be delivered to the Food Bank of Delaware between April and July were cancelled by the Trump Administration. This equates to almost 900,000 meals at a time when rising prices and economic hardships are driving a demand for services.
When visiting the Farmer’s Market, why not support local farmers and the CRC by buying and donating fresh produce? And when you are at the supermarket, why not look for BOGO (buy one get one) deals and donate the extra items to the CRC? They also operate a baby pantry and welcome donations of diapers. Larger sized diapers are always in demand, as is cereal, peanut butter, and pop-top canned goods that don’t require a can opener. You can bring it all to the Farmer’s Market on Tuesdays for an easy drop-off.

Interview with an RBMS Member

Beach Essentials is celebrating 27 Seasons in downtown Rehoboth! Owner Gregory Brown and his late husband, David Van Dyke, purchased the business in 1998. Located in the heart of the community at 33 Baltimore Avenue, Beach Essentials is a 1,500-square-foot store selling men’s fashion, designer swimwear, and beach/gear accessories.
Greg and David’s original concept was to cater their store to the gay male population, ages 19 to 45, who are part of the LGBTQ community. However, as the male community ages, they have rebranded to a mature, edgy clothing style.
Every year, Greg searches for unique items for the fashion-forward male. His vision is to provide beautiful pieces that surprise his customers. He considers the store a boutique, since the attention to detail is focused on good clothing options beyond swimwear. The brighter clothing colors create a strong demand response.
Since opening 27 years ago, a new generation of customers shop at the store, utilizing their social media and website. Greg is active in local LGBTQ organizations and local fundraisers, and he supports community events. Greg is very grateful to all the distributors, staff, and loyal customers over the years, making Beach Essentials the cornerstone of the beach community.
News from the City of Rehoboth Beach
Rehoboth Beach Lifeguard Station Opens!
Story adapted from Cape Gazette article, May 22, 2025.
Rehoboth Beach officials celebrated the grand opening of the city’s beach patrol and public restroom facility with a ribbon cutting and ceremonial ringing of the bell May 22. “Now, the beach patrol has a place it can call home,” said Rehoboth Beach Patrol Capt. Jeff Giles, who has been captain since 2021 and was also a Rehoboth Beach lifeguard in the 1980s. “It’s a place where alumni will be able to come and share their wisdom,” he said.
Giles said the lifeguards have a practice called horizon swims—getting in the water and swimming out for a half-hour or so, while always keeping an eye on a specific focal point.
The Henlopen Hotel has always been the marker he used, and now that’s not needed anymore. This building is the landmark of the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk and will be the center of everything, he said.
Mayor Stan Mills celebrated the longevity and evolution of the beach patrol, from a two-person operation more than 100 years ago to the 80 staff members of today.
“It’s a shining day for the city,” said Mills. “The threatening rain and poor weather doesn’t dampen the spirit at all,” he said.
Located at the eastern terminus of Baltimore Avenue, this project is years in the making. Construction began with the demolition of the old structure in early 2024. The city had expected demolition to begin soon after Labor Day 2023, but procedural delays pushed everything back nearly two months.
Beach patrol/comfort station by the numbers:
● At Boardwalk level, the two-story building is 37 feet tall;
● The building is 5,468 square feet and, if exterior and covered areas are included, it’s 7,935 square feet;
● The building is fully ADA-accessible;
● There are four changing rooms with built-in benches;
● There are 96 lockers for staff, two ATV garages, space for 32 bikes, and a 28-foot-tall flagpole on the second floor that faces the beach;
● There are 15 toilets, seven urinals, seven lavatories in public restrooms, and two family restrooms for the public;
● There are four toilets, one urinal, three lavatories and three showers for staff; and
● The city has hired 80 full- and part-time seasonal staff.

Demolition Project to Continue!
The City of Rehoboth Beach has allowed Onix Group to extend demolition of the Grotto Pizza and Sirocco Motel on Baltimore Avenue through June 13, adding about a month to the usual May 15-September 15 moratorium on such activities. Demolition will occur on weekdays only, from 8AM to 7PM. Demolition began last month, revealing compromised structural integrity in the Sirocco Motel, with a second-floor support beam rolling backwards. Work was paused to shore up the building for safe dismantling, which is expected to take about four weeks; initially, only the third story was to be taken down by hand.

Recognizing Our Volunteers: Jill Shull
Colleen Evans

“The more I become involved with Main Street, the more I want to be a part of it.”
Jill Shull was born in Phoenixville, PA, and lived in Exton, PA, for 30 years before moving to Rehoboth. Shull attended Gettysburg College as a business major, then received a Master’s in Education from West Chester University, and was an elementary school teacher in the Spring-Ford Area School District for 34 years before retiring in June 2021.Shull came to Rehoboth as a kid because her grandparents had a place in Bay City. During that time, she would crab, clam, and visit the Rehoboth Beach and Boardwalk. Her husband, Bill, and Shull started returning to Rehoboth Beach on vacations and loved it so much that they decided to move here. They’ve been here part-time since December 2014 and full-time since June 2021.When Shull retired, she was looking for ways to get involved in the community and to meet new people. Rehoboth in Bloom caught her eye before she retired but she knew that she wasn't able to commit to the organization until here full time. Shull reached out to Cindy Lovett in the spring of 2022 and has been a part of Rehoboth in Bloom since.
Shull’s role in Rehoboth in Bloom includes: -Lead for the 1st block of Rehoboth Avenue South team;-Committee Member for the Annual Bloomin' Dance Party fundraisers every year, and this past year she led that group of volunteers;-Created and run the social group for Bloom that organizes garden tours, happy hours, and meet-ups on the beach;-Handle the Communications and Social Media for the Volunteers of Bloom. In other areas of Main Street, Shull has volunteered for the Gumbo Crawl the past 2 years and the Margarita Crawl last year. Shull says they are such fun events that really make Rehoboth Beach special. The more Shull becomes involved with Main Street, the more she wants to participate. It provides that community feel that she had been looking for in retirement, and it gives her a sense of purpose. Shull has regularly volunteered with Humane Animal Partners in Rehoboth since January 2022. She and her husband recently fostered a 3-day-old kitten found by the roadside last October and adopted him in February—he's appropriately named Lucky!

Thank you for sharing your thoughts—it’s always uplifting to reflect on the wisdom found in Surah Waqiah.
