The 4th of July
Jim Mease
This July, we celebrate our nation's 249th birthday, marking the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by the Second Continental Congress in Philadelphia. Although Rehoboth Beach was not founded until 1873, Delaware's representation in Congress included George Read and Thomas McKean, from New Castle County, and Caesar Rodney from near Dover, all of whom signed the Declaration of Independence for Delaware.
Today, we remain a free, independent nation. Our nation’s birthday has morphed into one of our most beloved federal holidays. In Rehoboth Beach, thousands will enjoy a myriad of activities, including picnics and parades, as well as a fireworks display launching on Saturday, July 5th, around 9:30pm.
The high season has begun, attracting friends, families, and visitors from all walks of life to Rehoboth Beach to enjoy our beautiful beaches and the typical hazy, hot, and humid East Coast weather. From now until well after Labor Day, visitors can look forward to sunbathing, body surfing, and riding the ocean waves. Others may choose to go boating, deep-sea fishing, and participate in many more activities.
If you're looking for reasons to celebrate after July 4th, July offers several fun occasions. July 5 marks National Bikini Day, commemorating the debut of the revealing swimsuit in 1946—perfect for wearing or buying one! On July 6, you can celebrate International Kissing Day by sharing simple gestures, such as a kiss, with loved ones. July 11 is All-American Pet Photo Day, a time to appreciate and share pictures of our furry friends. Celebrate National Daiquiri Day on July 19 by toasting with this rum-based cocktail. Finally, July 20 is National Ice Cream Day, established by President Reagan, recognizing a treat loved by over 90% of Americans and fondly calling July National Ice Cream Month.
On July 24th, millions of Americans spend the day celebrating National Tequila Day by consuming the national drink of Mexico. On this day, with your favorite tequila, a little lime, and salt, mixed with your favorite margarita mix or just straight up as a quick pick-me-up shot, you'll be enjoying a drink savored by millions for centuries. Finally, on the 31st, you can celebrate National Chili Dog Day simply by topping your hot dog with all sorts of culinary chili creations for all to enjoy.
If none of these reasons to celebrate suit your taste, invent your own memories before the crazy, lazy days of summer are replaced with the cold winds of winter. You will be glad you did!
This month, we're highlighting some member businesses in Rehoboth Beach. Start at Gallery 50, a contemporary art and frame shop at 50 Wilmington Avenue, offering a diverse collection of modern artwork and custom framing. Head south to Above the Dunes at 101 S. Boardwalk for a beachfront view and a menu featuring raw bar items, lobster rolls, and more. For Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine, visit Cafe Azafran at 18 Baltimore Avenue, where each dish promises satisfaction.
Next, stop at Grace Boutique at 36 Baltimore Avenue for stylish women's clothing and accessories. Seafood lovers should check out Chesapeake & Maine at 316 Rehoboth Avenue, known for its inventive cocktails and fresh seafood. Finally, treat yourself to Uncle David's Ice Cream at 237 Rehoboth Avenue for delicious ice cream from Hopkins Farm Creamery, served by individuals with special needs. Enjoy your visit!
Rehoboth Beach is excited to welcome everyone this summer! When visiting our member businesses, please be sure to mention that you read about them in our newsletter. These businesses are all within walking distance of the boardwalk and beach. You'll find personal experiences from Rehoboth Beach Main Street volunteers about each place later in this newsletter.
Remember to take time to stop and enjoy the colorful plant displays in the earth planters provided by the Rehoboth in Bloom volunteers. Visit the canal-side garden by the Rehoboth Beach Museum, where volunteers have been working tirelessly to create a spectacular garden for all to enjoy.
Rehoboth Beach Main Street wishes all a safe and fun-filled 4th of July. As the crowds grow this month, please be especially mindful of bikers, scooters, joggers, dog walkers, and traffic while you are out and about in downtown Rehoboth Beach.

Showcasing Rehoboth Businesses
Above the Dunes
Peter Beck
On a beautiful, sunny day in early June, we decided it was the perfect time to enjoy lunch at Above the Dunes, located at 101 S. Boardwalk. With school just about to wrap up and crowds expected soon, it was an ideal day to beat the summer rush!
Above the Dunes offers breathtaking views of the ocean. Since it was a quiet spring evening, we easily secured a table outside on the deck, allowing us to admire the gorgeous scenery as we ate.
The restaurant opened in 2022 in the space formerly occupied by the Green Turtle. After a beautiful renovation, Above the Dunes has become a favorite among both locals and visitors. They serve delicious food that keeps you coming back for more, with everything being fresh and flavorful. It's the perfect place to unwind after a busy day at the beach or a day of shopping in town!
You can access the restaurant from the Wilmington Avenue entrance or directly from the boardwalk, located at 101 S. Boardwalk, Floor Two. Owners Mike Venazi and Bob Frankis also own Baja Bob’s, situated on the first floor; it’s a more casual spot for tacos and Mexican cuisine.
The dining room is large and often filled with cheerful diners during the summer months. It features a spacious layout that exudes a cozy beach vibe, with turquoise chairs, butcher block tables, and playful wicker lighting. The bar is impressive, though not suitable for teenagers!
Our waiter was friendly and attentive, and our drinks arrived promptly. The menu features a diverse selection of seafood options alongside other dishes. When I find a restaurant I like, I often order my favorite dish each time (a habit that might seem ridiculous, but it ensures my satisfaction). This time, I decided not to order my usual, the Caribbean Chicken Bowl, and instead enjoyed the Korean salmon bowl. It was just as delicious as my go-to dish! My dining companion had the Cali Chicken Grilled sandwich, featuring bacon and avocado, and served with a generous portion of crispy waffle fries.
We skipped dessert and spent a few minutes chatting with our charming waiter about life as a J1 student, which was quite interesting!
Above the Dunes is available for private parties and hosts various special events throughout the year, as well as dining specials during the off-season. Be sure to visit during the summer months for happy hour, which takes place every day from 1 PM to 5 PM, offering great deals on food and drinks at both the bar and in the dining area.
Check out the link to their website, Above the Dunes, to see the menu, make a reservation, and enjoy a wonderful dining experience!
Chesapeake and Maine
Peter Beck
On a lovely late spring Wednesday, my friend Maria and I ate, partied, and sang at Live Band Karaoke at Dogfish Head Brewing and Eats. We had such a fun and enjoyable evening that a few days later, we decided to take it up a notch and enjoy some traditional and creative seafood dishes at Chesapeake & Maine, right next door, at 316 Rehoboth Avenue.
Chesapeake & Maine is a delightful brewpub located in Rehoboth Beach, part of the Dogfish Head Brewing group. Established in 2016, Chesapeake & Maine offers a quieter atmosphere that provides a serene contrast to the more vibrant establishment next door.
The interior and exterior feature an appealing “industrial” design, with metal pipes, exposed ventilation, and a tin ceiling reminiscent of the 1890s. We also appreciated the restaurant's nautical theme, highlighted by porthole windows and chandeliers made from oyster shells. Overall, it creates a cozy and charming environment, perfect for enjoying a meal with a good friend.
The well-stocked bar offers a wide selection of Dogfish Head products, including their extensive variety of tasty beers, as well as a diverse range of other alcoholic beverages. I immediately ordered the Dogfish Head Pineapple Orange Mai Tai, which I love so much that I have stocked it in my fridge at home, and friends regularly bring me a four-pack when they visit.
Chesapeake & Maine is renowned for its locally sourced seafood, which is a staple of the region. Additionally, the menu features delicious dishes from the New England states.
Oyster enthusiasts will enjoy the charming oyster bar. At the oyster bar, you can enjoy a Kolsch tray including four 8-ounce beers and a dozen oysters of your choice. Yum!
For our meal, we started with their version of buffalo wings, but instead of chicken, they are made of crispy cornmeal catfish bites tossed in buffalo sauce. They were delightful.
For my main course, I enjoyed the warm lobster roll, which comes with lemon mayo and melted butter, and excellent Old Bay French fries! Maria decided to satisfy her “inner child” by ordering the Lobster Mac and Cheese. Both dishes were served in generous portions and were very satisfying. There was no room for dessert!
To add intrigue to their menu, each month Chesapeake and Maine has a new protein-based seafood dish based on the seafood of the region. It is paired with an appropriate cocktail. Year-round on Sunday evenings, you can enjoy a whole Maine lobster for only 15 bucks. How good is that!
Chesapeake and Maine offers musical entertainment on the weekends. You can find out who is performing, check the menu, and make reservations by visiting their website!
Chesapeake and Maine is open daily from 4:00pm to 10:00pm during the summer months, so be sure to stop in and enjoy a fabulous meal!
Café Azafrán
Peter Pizzolongo

Café Azafrán, at 18 Baltimore Avenue, serves up an award-winning blend of Mediterranean and Spanish cuisine. A small family-run business, with a father-and-son chef and several dedicated employees, Café Azafrán has been on Baltimore Avenue in Rehoboth Beach since 2010. The original Café Azafrán opened in Lewes in 2002 and closed in 2013.
The quality of food and freshness speaks for itself. Each dish, from tapas to large plates, will leave you satisfied and looking forward to your next visit.
Located on the ocean block of Baltimore Avenue, in downtown Rehoboth Beach, Café Azafrán has a cozy dining area, with a spacious covered back porch for dining, private parties, or Paella Nights.
I’ve been a frequent Café Azafrán diner since its opening in Rehoboth Beach, and had been to the Lewes location several times, as well. I always look forward to my dining experiences there and have recently been excited about the new menu! I pretty much always start with the Jumbo Shrimp Ajillo, after my on-the-house amuse bouche of olives and tasty bread dipped in oil. I’ve also had the PEI Mussels and Steamed Littleneck Clams, which are both yummy! I recently had the Bolognese Cavatappi—a large portion for a small plate, and I ended up taking half of it home for a delicious lunch the next day. Other meat tapas include a delightful Fig-Glazed Duck Breast, Charred Schwarma Chicken Wings, and a Lamb Chops Tapa with Baby Carrots. Vegetarian Tapas include Asparagus a la Plancha, Ratatouille Provencal, and Baked Stuffed Brie Cheese in Phyllo. (I’ve had the latter recently and practically licked the bowl!)
Café Azafrán’s menu also includes large plates. You’ll love the Tandoori Yogurt Baked Halibut, Black Magic Rubbed 1/2 -Pound Filet Mignon, and Seafood Taragona.
Many of us enjoy coming to Café Azafrán for Wednesday Paella Nights on the back porch, as well as Thursday steak nights, with John Flynn on the piano and Holly Lane singing as she creates perfect cocktails. In addition to Holly, David also serves as an excellent bartender. When you dine at Café Azafrán, you will be treated to excellent service provided by Billy, Evan, Aycan, Umut, and Lana. The awesome chefs are Richard, Ryan, Sean, Donna, and Elena.
Café Azafrán is open Monday through Saturday for dinner, 5:00pm until closing. You can make a reservation via Open Table or by calling 302-227-8100. Come to Café Azafrán as soon as you can—and, if you’re there before a show at Clear Space Theatre, you’ll probably see me there!

Gallery 50 Presents: Fun and Games by Michael Fitts
Robert Howley
Tucked into the heart of Rehoboth Beach, Gallery 50, at 50 Wilmington Avenue, continues to enchant visitors with its striking, whimsical, and always unique collection of fine art. This season, the spotlight is on Fun and Games, a captivating solo exhibit by Charlottesville-based artist Michael Fitts.
Fitts, whose career spans over three decades, has made a name for himself by transforming the overlooked and everyday into something extraordinary. His medium of choice—oil on reclaimed metal—challenges the very concept of permanence and value in art. In Fun and Games, Fitts reimagines discarded objects from modern life, elevating them into powerful icons of culture in an era dominated by mass production and disposability.
Each piece invites viewers to reconsider what we deem worthy of attention. A rusty lunchbox, a forgotten toy, a vintage game piece—these artifacts of daily life become layered, nostalgic, and oddly reverent in Fitts’ hands. His work speaks to both memory and material, asking us to pause and find beauty in the ordinary.
As always, Gallery 50 is also home to the finest framing services on Delmarva, led by master framer Ed McGann. Whether you're purchasing a piece from the gallery or bringing in your own, McGann’s craftsmanship ensures your artwork is presented at its very best.
Gallery 50 is located next to Henlopen City Oyster House and Salt Air. For more information, call 302-227-2050, visit www.gallery50art.com, or email info@gallery50art.com.
Uncle David’s Ice Cream
Maria Misak
Summer is synonymous with ice cream! So during our recent heat wave, I visited Uncle David’s Ice Cream at 237 Rehoboth Avenue, which features local Hopkins Farm Creamery ice cream.
As I waited for my cone, another customer was handed a strawberry cheesecake milkshake that made me second-guess my decision. Then I was distracted by something else swirling around in my head. I absentmindedly reached for my cone of Moo Cookies, which is their version of cookies and cream, and was met with the biggest smile I had seen from anyone in recent days. The server seemed just as happy to give me the cone as I was to receive it, reminding me to be present in the moment!
Additionally, Uncle David’s offers non-dairy options and provides mobile catering, which would be a fabulous addition to neighborhood block parties, school events, church festivals, or as a special treat for an assisted living facility or work conference.
Uncle David’s is more than just an ice cream shop; it was created to honor David Samson and raise awareness for the inclusion and acceptance of individuals with Down syndrome by providing them with employment opportunities. David was also the inspiration for the annual October Boardwalk Buddy Walk, which to date has raised over $1 million to benefit organizations that provide educational, occupational, and recreational opportunities to people with Down syndrome.
Uncle David’s Ice Cream is more than just good ice cream - it’s ice cream that does good.

Volunteer Recognition: Robert Howley

Robert Howley is a recent volunteer with the RBMS Communications Committee, and he has hit the ground running with several articles under his belt already!
Robert was born in Northeast Philadelphia and grew up in Chester County, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Villanova University with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and moved to Washington, DC for a position in corporate sales. Robert retired after 23 years and began working in fitness, wellness, and retail, eventually becoming a small business owner.
In Washington, DC, Robert volunteered with D.C. Greater Cares for 20 years. His father always stressed the importance of volunteerism, and Robert always loved it. Having childhood friends who own vacation homes in Rehoboth Beach, he began visiting our town frequently, and eventually decided to make the move permanently. “It’s the best place in the world, in my opinion: a great decision! What better way to show my gratitude for this place than to give back to the community! And now I get to volunteer with RBMS!”
We’re grateful that Robert moved to Rehoboth Beach and that he’s volunteering with RBMS! Thank you, Robert!

Why I’m a Member of Rehoboth Beach Main Street

Tyler Townsend – co-owner with Drew Mitchell – The Purple Parrot
Tyler and Drew bought the Purple Parrot in November 2024. Tyler is also a partner in Second Block Hospitality, which owns Aqua, The Pines, Drift, and Bodhi in downtown Rehoboth Beach. Both companies are long-time supporting members of Rehoboth Beach Main Street.
Tyler’s background in the restaurant business began almost 10 years ago when he returned to home-ground in Rehoboth after completing studies in hospitality management at Florida International University. Initially, he spent 2 to 3 years interning in downtown restaurants, but then he partnered in the development of Second Block Hospitality.
The previous owners of Purple Parrot, Hugh Fuller and Troy Roberts, had been great supporters and partners with Rehoboth Beach Main Street on many events. Because of his previous experience with Main Street, Tyler had no second thoughts about continuing the relationship.
In Tyler’s words, “I saw all of the great things you do here, between the Crawls and the support you give the businesses, helping them promote their events, and pretty much the focus of everything you do is designed to bring business to downtown businesses”. Tyler also said it has been great working so closely with Main Street staff and volunteers, and RBMS provides a truly great resource for businesses.
Many thanks to Tyler for being so supportive of RBMS!
