The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

Jim Mease

We have reached the year's final month, arguably the busiest. It offers activities for everyone, including tree lightings, holiday sing-alongs, gift exchanges, and much more.  It is December, a name derived from the Latin word "decem," meaning ten. This was true in the early Roman calendar before January and February were added by the Roman ruler Numa Pompilius. Like November, it was left unchanged as it moved to the 12th spot in the Julian and Gregorian calendars.

Stuffed from our Thanksgiving Day feasts, our minds turn to A Most Wonderful Time of the Year. It is the month we celebrate Christmas worldwide, on the 25th. It is considered both a Christian holiday, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, and a cultural one, with history and traditions combining Christian beliefs with ancient folklore and pagan rituals.  Other celebrations include Hanukkah and Kwanzaa. Hanukkah is an eight-night celebration commemorating the rededication of the second temple in Jerusalem during the Maccabean Revolt. Celebrations include meals with traditional foods, the lighting of the menorah, and eight nights of games and gifts. Kwanzaa is a holiday celebrating African culture and community with activities focused on seven principles: collective work, creativity, and purpose. Communities celebrate with feasts, music, dance, and a continued commitment to cultural values.

While there are many more celebrations and rituals during this month here in Rehoboth Beach, we start the month off with the Hometown Christmas Parade on December 2, beginning at 6:30pm as fire trucks, floats, bands, community groups, and individuals of all ages will be decked out in Holiday finery as they make their way along Rehoboth Avenue. Of course, everyone will be looking forward to seeing Santa and Mrs. Claus as they officially arrive in town. Residents and guests are encouraged to come to the parade, visit the Rehoboth Beach Christmas tree by the bandstand, and stop by the Rehoboth Beach Volunteer Fire Company afterward for refreshments and a chance for children to visit with Santa.

All the stores and restaurants in town have been fashionably decorated to help put you in a festive spirit as you shop for family and friends, and perhaps even grab a few things for yourself. They are ready to welcome all with great deals you can't resist.

December is notable for having the shortest daylight hours of the year, with the winter solstice occurring on the 21st, marking the official start of winter. It is the most popular month for decorating homes, especially for Christmas and Hanukkah.

The month’s flower, the Narcissus, symbolizes self-esteem and vanity, adding beauty to the winter landscape. December is also the peak time for engagements, particularly on Christmas Eve.

While December 25 is the only federal holiday in the U.S., Festivus, a non-commercial holiday popularized by "Seinfeld," is celebrated on the 23rd. The first text message, "Merry Christmas," was sent in December 1992. Additionally, December 14 is Monkey Day, and more pizza is consumed this month than any other. Pepsi was first served in December 1891.

Rehoboth Beach Main Street has selected several of our member businesses for you to check out during this holiday season. All are within easy walking distance to the beach and boardwalk, where you can take a break and examine your purchases while enjoying the ocean view. We recommend visiting the Christmas Spirit at 161 Rehoboth Avenue. Here, you can browse all things Christmas, including a dazzling display of hundreds of ornaments. Moving to the other side of the Avenue, you can visit Fun for All Toys at 42 Rehoboth Avenue, Penny Lane, a quaint European-inspired shopping area between Wilmington and Rehoboth Avenue. It is a well-stocked toy store with a major focus on classic toys.  Also in the Penny Lane Mall is Gifts of Serenity (The Olde Salt), which features various tasteful accessories and gifts for any occasion. If you need a place to stay in Rehoboth Beach, the Breakers Hotel & Suites at 105 2nd Street will surely please you. It has 98 air-conditioned rooms featuring refrigerators, microwaves, private balconies, and other amenities. Finally, if you are looking for a nice meal in a pleasant atmosphere, DiFebo’s at 12 N. First Street is the place for you! It is an Italian restaurant specializing in homemade pasta, family gravy, meatballs, and fresh coastal seafood.

These businesses provide a friendly and welcoming atmosphere to ensure a great experience. You can read more about them later in this newsletter. If you visit, mention that you heard about them here—merchants will appreciate your support!

Finally, Rehoboth in Bloom has completed swapping out the summer flowers in the earth planters around town, and they are now sporting their winter coats for your enjoyment.

As the days grow shorter, be mindful of your surroundings and watch out for bikes, dog walkers, and children as you enjoy downtown.  Rehoboth Beach Main Street wishes all a Happy Holiday, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the Community Unity Dinner on Sunday, December 8th, 2024, at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center from 4:30 - 7:30pm.

RBMS is a not-for-profit, volunteer-driven organization. We aim to foster and promote a vibrant, year-round, in-town experience for businesses, residents, and visitors alike. With funding from members, donors, and the City of Rehoboth Beach, RBMS stages promotional events and supports Rehoboth in Bloom and the 111 sidewalk planters and four city gardens maintained by a year-round volunteer corps. We promote our city and merchants through social media, including Google advertising. We foster a beautiful and vibrant city and a sense of place and community through programs like the Cottage and Town Awards, Sign and Awning Grants, and the annual Community Unity Dinner (coming up on December 8th–see story below)!

All for Fun and Fun For All!

Peter Beck

Fun For All! Toys & Games is a popular shop that brings merriment to visitors and residents alike. Located in the quaint Penny Lane Mall, near the boardwalk at 42 Baltimore Avenue, the store has specialized in classic toys, games, and novelties since 1998. Frequent shoppers will tell you that this store is one in a million!

While walking around the shop, you will quickly feel nostalgic as you browse the merchandise. They have all kinds of vintage and classic goodies here: Little green army men, fake bugs, ouija boards, tinker toys, Jack in a Box, and even… a remote control fart machine!  You might even find Wooly Willy! Remember that toy… with metal filings moved about with a magnetic wand to add features to a cartoon face? Perhaps my favorite is a paddle ball, a flat paddle with a small red rubber ball attached in the middle by an elastic string to hit the ball as many times as possible in a row. Of course, you will find classic board games such as  Monopoly, Scrabble, the Game of Life, Trouble, and Stratego. And who can forget the fun you used to have playing Twister!

While the inner child in you will have much fun shopping at Fun for All, don't worry: you will find many options for young children. Of course, you will also find nifty items great for stocking stuffers: cards, novelties, magic tricks!

The toy store will bring a smile to anyone of any age. Whether you are looking for a jigsaw or a logic puzzle, they have a unique collection to excite the brain at all price points!

Check out their website, call 302-515-5800, or just stop in! Stroll down to Penny Lane Mall, revisit your childhood, and find just the right gift as we go into the holiday season.

Gifts of Serenity (The Olde Salt)

Peter Beck

Gifts of Serenity (The Olde Salt)  http://www.gifts-of-serenity.com/ is a nifty shop in the European-themed Penny Lane Mall at 42 Rehoboth Avenue. I have always been intrigued as to why the shop had two names! So, on a lovely late fall Thursday afternoon, I strolled downtown and decided to find out!

I entered the shop and was cheerfully greeted by store co-owner Jeannine Groblewski. Within minutes, I was fascinated by an incredible array of fun gift ideas in every shop's nook and cranny. There were cocktail napkins, tee shirts, hats, sweatshirts, holiday items, soaps, cards…you name it! Of course, there are many beach-themed items and holiday gifts at just about every price point, so you will surely find a unique gift for that special someone in the shop.

Jeannine explained that the shop's most popular item is the kitchen/bar towel collection. The towels, engraved with clever sayings, make a tasteful gift for friends and family. Pairing them with a bottle of wine is also a good idea for several obvious reasons!

Most notably, shoppers will find that the ever-popular Peace Frogs clothing line is situated prominently in the center of the store. Peace Frogs offers a line of clothing that promotes positivity through comfortable, high-quality styles you can wear daily.

Finally, note that many of the store's items are crafted by local artisans! The inventory constantly changes, so you never know what you might find while browsing the aisles.

Now came the big question: Why are there two names to the shop?  Before I asked the big question, it turns out that Jeannine and I are both Long Island natives, which we chatted about for a bit, and then Jeannine explained that her family often came to Rehoboth Beach in the summer.  Finally, around 25 years ago, she decided to relocate and open a shop, and she saw a vacant space in the Penny Lane Mall, and Voila!  Gifts of Serenity was born.

Not long after, Jeannine became friends with Amy Hayes, the owner of the Olde Salt right next door.  Around ten years ago, they realized it would be beneficial to break down the temporary wall between their shops and combine their businesses!

Since the Olde Salt has been a staple of the Rehoboth shopping scene for over thirty years, Jeannine and Amy decided to keep the names of their combined business venture. When shopping, you don’t know what items are from Gifts of Serenity or The Olde Salt, but that’s okay because you will enjoy strolling around the store to find the perfect gift!

DiFebo’s Tours Italy!

In October 2024, DiFebo’s Restaurant owners Lisa and Jeff embarked on a transformative Cooking & Culture Tour of Italy, taking along the restaurant’s Executive Chef Matt Gurley and a few key staff members. This incredible journey allowed Chef Matt to experience Italy’s diverse culinary landscape firsthand—from hands-on cooking classes in Tuscany to exploring the bustling food markets of Bologna. The sights, sounds, and, most importantly, the flavors of Italy have deeply inspired him. Now, back in Rehoboth Beach, Chef Matt is infusing the menu at DiFebo’s with the knowledge and creativity he gained, crafting unique dishes and specials that bring a true taste of Italy to the restaurant’s guests. It's an exciting fusion of tradition and innovation that you won’t want to miss! The next DiFebo’s Cooking & Culture Tour is scheduled for 3/31/2025 - 4/9/2025! Recognizing Our Volunteers: Alex Ix

Peter Beck

Alex Ix and his husband, Gare Galbraith, moved to Rehoboth Beach from Charlottesville, Virginia, in 2021 when Alex decided to retire. Before retiring, Alex worked as a realtor for twenty years and was well-known throughout Charlottesville. He also worked with his family’s textile business, moving from New York City to Charlottesville in 1992 to help run the company. In Charlottesville, Alex was a dedicated volunteer with the AIDS Service Group and served as president of his community’s Homeowners Association (HOA).

Alex’s extensive business experience has made him a versatile and reliable volunteer at RBMS (Rehoboth Beach Main Street). Since relocating to Delaware, he has actively participated in various RBMS events. You may have seen him managing the check-in tables at Aqua, Zoggs, and Claws Seafood during the most recent Margarita and Gumbo Crawls. Alex greets guests with a warm smile that instantly makes them feel welcome. If you've attended the two RBMS fashion shows, you might not have realized that Alex, along with Gare, has worked diligently backstage, organizing clothes for the male models and assisting with outfit changes. This task requires careful timing and precision, making it no small feat.

Alex dedicated many Monday evenings to collaborating with the fashion show team to plan and organize. Their months of hard work resulted in two very successful shows!

When he's not volunteering at RBMS, Alex enjoys long walks to town from his home in Truitt Homestead, and in the warmer months, he always finishes his walks with a refreshing dip in the ocean. He also lovesr leisurely bike rides along the Junction Breakwater Trail. Alex works out daily at the gym and pool in his community and often attends social events such as Trivia Night and Open Mic Night at the Truitt Homestead Pub. Additionally, he volunteers yearly to represent Truitt Homestead during the Sea Witch Parade, walking down Rehoboth Avenue at giving candy to eager kidsg.

We thank Alex for joining RBMS as a volunteer and sharing his expertise.

City Update

City Seeking New City Solicitor

The City of Rehoboth Beach is issuing a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) to identify and retain a city solicitor to represent the city. As a charter position, the city solicitor is the chief legal counsel to the city, which includes city commissioners, the city manager, various city departments, and various city boards and commissions, except for the city’s Planning Commission and the city’s Board of Adjustment (each of which has its own independent counsel). The successful candidate hired through the RFQ process will be an independent contractor of the city. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a variety of important issues facing “the Nation’s Summer Capital” as it continues to maintain its small-town beachfront charm consistent with the needs of its residents, property owners, businesses, and visitors. Please review and respond to the RFQ by December 2, 2024.

The Board of Commissioners also seeks applicants who wish to serve as in-house counsel in the city solicitor capacity. If you want to be a city employee rather than an independent contractor, please apply through the City of Rehoboth Beach employment opportunities portal.

Paving Update for Rehoboth Avenue and Surrounding Streets

DelDOT has requested that paving in downtown Rehoboth occur during the day rather than at night when the temperature is more favorable.  Daytime paving on Rehoboth Avenue, between 2nd Street and the bandstand, began November 18, with night milling for areas west of 2nd Street. Parking will remain accessible on at least one side of the avenue. Work will pause from November 27 until after the Hometown Christmas Parade on December 2.

Milling and paving on Maryland Avenue and 1st Street are set to start on November 25 and are expected to be completed by December 3. No on-street parking will be allowed from November 25-27 and December 2-3, but driveway access will be maintained. No work is scheduled from November 28 to December 1.

Following this, Scarborough Avenue Extended will be milled and paved, along with crack sealing on St. Lawrence Street, Brooklyn Avenue, and Stockley Street.

Ευχαριστώ για την πρόταση! Αυτά τα παιχνίδια με μπόνους και πολύτιμους λίθους ακούγονται ενδιαφέροντα. Μήπως έχεις κάποιες προτάσεις για συγκεκριμένα παιχνίδια που να περιλαμβάνουν αυτά τα χαρακτηριστικά; Επίσης, θα ήθελα να μάθω αν υπάρχουν κάποιοι περιορισμοί ή προϋποθέσεις για την ενεργοποίηση αυτών των μπόνους. Είναι εύκολο να κατανοήσω τη διαδικασία για να τα αξιοποιήσω σωστά;

Διάβαζα πρόσφατα για τα διαδικτυακά παιχνίδια καζίνο και με ενδιαφέρει να βρω παιχνίδια με καλύτερα μπόνους και ανταμοιβές. Επίσης, ψάχνω για παιχνίδια που να έχουν στοιχεία όπως πολύτιμους λίθους ή ειδικούς γύρους μπόνους. Ξέρει κανείς κάποια καλή πλατφόρμα γι’ αυτά;
